Hida folk village(Trip3) 飛騨の里(旅3)

Thanks for continuing reading my trip report. 

Next, we visited Takayama.

Takayama is a mountain city located in Gifu Prefecture. The narrow streets of Sanmachi-dori, with its old townscape, are lined with a lot of small wooden merchant houses dating back to the Edo period. The Takayama Festival, held in spring and fall, is a historic festival that began in the mid-1600s and is characterized by the gorgeous golden floats called “yatai” and karakuri dolls. Now it’s summer, so we didn’t see it though, it must be interesting.

 

I was surprised by a lot of foreigners there, probably because this place is famous for them and I was pleased to talk with them in English for a few words. 

We got up early and went to Asaich (Morning market), and bought pickles of red turnips.

After Asaich, we went to Hida-no-sato (Hida folk village) which is close to Takayama station. It is recreating Takayama old village, more than 30 traditional buildings including thatched and shingled houses, shrines, sheds, and others are scattered around the hill. Every house is moved from different parts of the Hida region.  Takayama is known as a heavy snow area, so usually the roofs of the houses have a unique style called Gassho-zukuri, which is a Japanese architectural style with a distinct steep thatched roof. But in the south it is not so heavy snow, the roofs are plates.  I saw stones on the plates of the roof to avoid flying and it surprised me, because it looked too simple. 

Many kinds of daily tools and articles are displayed inside each house, which makes it easy to imagine how life was in the old days. Every morning, fires are lit in the irori (sunken hearths), because the smoke kills the insects of thatched wood and maintains the good conditions of the houses. Also, the smell is good, so it creates a peaceful atmosphere. When I visited the fires were also lit. I like the smell very much.

 

I saw a little girl who was with her parents together, but maybe her parents were a little tired, so she was looking around alone in an old house.  I sometimes heard her exclaim, “Wow!!” It made me smile!
Since she looked curiously up at a wooden pole, I told her, it’s instead of a ladder, she said again “Wow!” with shining eyes. She was so cute!! Probably, she must be very interested in old Japanese houses and culture. I hope she keeps her feelings and comes back again someday.

私の旅行記を読み続けてくれてありがとう。

次に訪れたのは高山です。
高山は岐阜県にある山岳都市です。古い町並みが残るさんまち通りには、江戸時代からの小さな木造商家がたくさんあります。春と秋に開催される高山祭は、1600年代半ばに始まった歴史のあるお祭りで、屋台と呼ばれる豪華絢爛な金色の山車とからくり人形が特徴です。今は夏なので、私たちは見なかったけど、きっと素敵なのでしょう。

ここは有名な場所だからか、外国人がたくさん居て驚きました。でも少し英語で話せて嬉しかったです。
早起きして朝市に行き、赤カブの漬物を買いました。

アサイチの後は、高山駅からほど近い飛騨の里へ。高山の古い集落を再現したもので、茅葺きや板葺きの民家、神社、小屋など30以上の伝統的な建物が丘の上に点在しています。どの民家も飛騨地方各地から移築されたものです。 高山は豪雪地帯として知られていますので、たいていは合掌造りと言われる急勾配の茅葺屋根ですが、南部の雪はそれほどでもないそうで、屋根も板葺になっているそうです。 その板葺の屋根の上に石を置いて飛ばないようにしているのを見たのですが、あまりにも簡素に見えてびっくりしました。

各家の中には、様々な生活道具や生活用品が展示されていて、昔の生活が簡単に想像できます。毎朝、囲炉裏に火が焚かれるのですが、それは、その煙が茅の虫を退治し、家屋の状態を良好に保つからです。また、香りもいいので、穏やかな空気感があって心地よいです。私が行った時も、囲炉裏に火がありました。その香りがとても好きです。

ご両親と一緒にいた小さな女の子が、一人で古い家を見て回っているのを見かけました。 時々、”わあ！”という声が聞こえてきます。ついこちらも笑顔になりますね！
その女の子が木の棒を不思議そうに見上げているので、梯子の代わりだよ、と教えてあげると、また目を輝かせて「わぁー！」と言うのです。かわいかった！きっと日本の古い家屋や文化に興味があるのでしょう。その気持ちを忘れずに、またいつか来てほしいな。
